Bestowed each year upon the top defensive players at every position in both leagues, the Gold Glove stands as one of the game’s most respected honors. In 1990, Gwynn’s sure-handed play in right field for the Padres earned him the distinction, as he committed just a single error all season while posting a .991 fielding percentage. His defense complemented his offensive consistency, proving he was far more than just the game’s best hitter.

Gwynn’s defensive reputation was built on precise reads, flawless positioning, and the ability to make the difficult play look effortless. His reliability in right field anchored the Padres’ defense, while his strong and accurate arm deterred baserunners from taking extra chances.
