This game-used baseball marked the moment Tony Gwynn cemented his place atop the Padres’ all-time RBI leaderboard. On July 27, 1993, at the age of 33, Gwynn delivered a 3-RBI performance in an 8-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs, surpassing Dave Winfield’s long-standing record of 626 RBIs. This inscribed ball from that game represents the hit that secured Gwynn’s spot in the Padres’ record books, a position he would hold with an astonishing 1,138 career RBIs—512 more than any other Padre.


Gwynn’s RBI total only grew from that day forward, with his most prolific seasons coming in 1995 (90 RBIs) and 1997 (119 RBIs). His steady production over the next seven-and-a-half seasons ensured that his lead in RBIs would never be challenged. Even today, current Padres star Manny Machado, who trails by roughly 600 RBIs, would need to perform at a high level for several more seasons in a Padres uniform to come close to Gwynn’s record.
