Presented to DJ Yella, this official RIAA Platinum award commemorates over one million units sold of Straight Outta Compton, the 1988 debut album from N.W.A. Released through Ruthless Records in partnership with Priority, the album became one of the most consequential works in hip hop history—both musically and culturally.


As one of the project’s two lead producers alongside Dr. Dre, DJ Yella helped craft a sound that was raw, layered, and unmistakably urgent. Built from minimalist drum machines, funk-rooted samples, and a stripped-down aesthetic, their production framed some of the most incendiary verses of the era. Tracks like “F**k tha Police” and “Straight Outta Compton” delivered unfiltered portraits of systemic injustice and street life in South Central Los Angeles, sparking national controversy and a lasting cultural shift.


Beyond its commercial success, Straight Outta Compton reshaped the direction of West Coast hip hop and introduced a new era of reality-based rap. It launched the solo careers of Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, and Eazy-E; inspired a major motion picture; and was later inducted into the Library of Congress’s National Recording Registry for its historical importance.


This framed award features silver-colored representations of the vinyl and cassette formats, a panel of the original album artwork, and the official RIAA certification plate personalized to DJ Yella. His signature appears on the outer glass of the frame in black marker.
