Description

Presented to DJ Yella, this official RIAA Gold award recognizes the success of “Supersonic,” the breakout 1988 single by J.J. Fad and the first certified Gold release in the history of Ruthless Records. Released as a 7" single, “Supersonic” was produced by DJ Yella and Dr. Dre, and helped define the label’s early electro-hop aesthetic while establishing its commercial reach beyond Los Angeles.

The track introduced J.J. Fad’s high-speed rhyme style and minimalist, drum-machine-driven production to a national audience. Its hybrid of danceable beats and pop structure made it a crossover success—earning a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Performance and laying the groundwork for Ruthless to enter mainstream markets. “Supersonic” was also one of the first female rap singles to break through nationally, making it a key cultural moment in the late ’80s hip hop landscape.


This smaller-format RIAA award features a gold-colored 7" vinyl mounted above a certification plate personalized to DJ Yella and a traditional RIAA sales award seal. His signature appears on the outer glass of the framed plaque.
