Description

Baseball connected to Tony Gwynn’s first 5-for-5 performance in the Major Leagues, recorded on April 16, 1987 at Jack Murphy Stadium. Facing the Los Angeles Dodgers in a day game, Gwynn delivered four of his hits—including two doubles—against 1987 All-Star Orel Hershiser, who held opponents to a career .249 batting average. Gwynn, however, batted .321 lifetime against the Dodgers ace, showcasing his ability to adjust to elite pitching.

The five-hit effort helped lead San Diego to a 3–2 victory, just the team’s second win of the season after a 2–8 start. It marked the first of several games in which Gwynn would collect five or more hits, further establishing his reputation as one of the most consistent and technically sound hitters of his era.
