Description

This rare pin was issued exclusively to members of “The Committee of 2000,” the civic group that played a central role in securing public support for what would become Petco Park—home of the San Diego Padres since 2004. Bearing the message “A Ballpark for San Diego,” the pin symbolized participation in the grassroots campaign to bring a new ballpark to downtown San Diego.

While not directly commemorating Tony Gwynn himself, this particular example comes from his personal estate, making it a unique crossover between the civic history of Petco Park and the man most closely associated with Padres baseball. Gwynn, who spent his entire career with the franchise and later had Tony Gwynn Plaza named in his honor, would have had a strong connection to this effort—even if indirectly.

This pin stands as a distinctive artifact: a piece of San Diego civic and baseball history, owned by the greatest Padre of all time.
