On September 4, 1985, Tony Gwynn recorded the 520th hit of his Major League career with an RBI single in the bottom of the third inning off Ron Darling of the New York Mets. Gwynn went 2-for-4 in the game, showcasing his usual precision at the plate despite a 9–2 loss for the Padres. Darling, an All-Star that year, finished the season with a 2.90 ERA—another in a long line of top-tier pitchers that Gwynn faced and frequently bested during his career.
