Description

On April 21, 1984, Tony Gwynn registered the 173rd hit of his Major League career during a 9–6 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Facing future Cy Young and World Series champion Orel Hershiser, Gwynn singled in the eighth inning and promptly stole second base. He went 3-for-5 on the day, including a double, fueling a Padres win at Dodger Stadium.


Performances like this helped shape Gwynn’s reputation as one of the game’s toughest outs—especially against elite arms. Over his career, he batted .339 against Cy Young Award winners and hit over .400 against eight of them.
