Description

On April 19, 1984, Tony Gwynn recorded the 168th hit of his Major League career during an early-season road game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Batting against right-hander Alejandro Peña, Gwynn delivered two singles—one in the seventh inning and another in the ninth—finishing 2-for-3 in a 4–0 Padres loss. Though the team came up short, Gwynn’s multi-hit performance reinforced the consistency and discipline that would become his trademark. By 1984, Gwynn was already establishing himself as a contact hitter with elite bat control and an eye for the zone—traits that would carry him to eight National League batting titles and a Hall of Fame career.
