Baseball from Tony Gwynn’s 1,334th career hit, recorded on September 12, 1989 in a home game against the Houston Astros. Facing right-hander Jim Clancy, Gwynn delivered a signature opposite-field line-drive single to short left field. His performance contributed to a dominant 9–0 Padres victory at Jack Murphy Stadium.

The milestone came in a 1989 season that saw Gwynn lead the National League in batting average (.336) and hits (203), earn both the Silver Slugger and Gold Glove Awards, and be selected to his sixth All-Star Game. His ability to use the entire field—particularly his mastery of opposite-field hitting—remained one of the hallmarks of his game throughout his Hall of Fame career.
