Awarded by Ampex to Antoine “DJ Yella” Carraby, this Golden Reel plaque honors his work on N.W.A.’s “Straight Outta Compton”—a defining record in West Coast rap and one of the most influential hip-hop albums ever released. The Ampex Golden Reel Award was given to artists and producers whose projects were recorded and duplicated on Ampex tape, and achieved gold-level commercial success.


Released in 1988, “Straight Outta Compton” marked a cultural turning point, with raw production and urgent political commentary delivered over hard-hitting beats. As the group’s producer, DJ Yella helped shape the sonic identity of the record alongside Dr. Dre. This piece includes a gold-colored reel, central Ampex Golden Reel emblem, and presentation plate listing the recipient, album title, and studio origin in Redwood City, California. The reel is signed and shows minor color degradation and handling marks consistent with age and storage.
