On September 25, 1986, Tony Gwynn singled to center off Dodgers left-hander Rick Honeycutt at Dodger Stadium, notching his 200th hit of the season in the top of the third inning. With that swing, Gwynn became the first player in Padres history to record three consecutive 200-hit seasons—a benchmark of elite consistency.

He would finish the year with 211 hits and a .329 batting average, securing his second straight National League batting title. The 1986 season marked the first time Gwynn reached the 200-hit plateau, and it foreshadowed the remarkable durability and discipline that would define his Hall of Fame career. It was one of five seasons in which he would eclipse 200 hits, part of a run that made Gwynn one of the most prolific contact hitters of his era—and one of the toughest outs in modern baseball.
